Pause and reflect on this person – try to see him or her in your mind’s eye.

Done that?

Good.

Now you have your central character.

This is the person you should get used to seeing your world through. Instead of seeing your imaginary world from some god-like perspective (as many new writers are tempted to do), you should begin to imagine your character inside of your world, touching it, smelling it and interacting with the people that inhabit it.

When you’re satisfied you have a rough idea for a hero, think of a name. It’s best to think of the name last because often naming a character too early limits your imagination. Save it to last is my advice.
